XML
The objectives of this study are to analyze whether reading exercises available in Bahasa Inggris Kelas 6 Untuk SD & MI textbook already represent the reading competences students must acquired as stated in Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan (KTSP) 2006, and whether they reflect the types and forms of comprehension questions proposed by Day and Park (2005) in which they believe these can help students become interactive readers.
The data taken were analyzed by using two measurement tools, which are the English syllabus designed by English teachers of SDN 03 Pagi Tanjung Barat, and five forms and six types of comprehension questions developed by Day and Park (2005). The result of the study shows that not all reading exercises in ten chapters of the textbook are in line with the themes, basic competencies and students’ learning achievement indicators contained in the school English teaching syllabus.
Meanwhile, another result shows that even though not all five forms and six types of comprehension questions were used by the authors in designing the questions the reading exercises, at least there are some of them that they use in presenting the questions. So, overall, the questions in reading exercises in the textbook can be categorized as reading comprehension questions since they already reflect what Day and Park (2005) mentioned as forms and types of comprehension questions.
